Chlorine Dioxide
 Chlorine dioxide has been described as the "ideal biocide". The compound was first produced by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1811. Recent innovations in safe and efficient delivery mechanisms have allowed it to be applied to a wide variety of applications.

The potential for this technology is far reaching; applications range from health, cooling towers, food industry, building services..........in fact, anywhere where microbial contamination is an issue.
It can be used for numerous odour control applications. These range from cleaning up emissions of harmful and odorous molecules from industrial processes, to removing tobacco odours from enclosed spaces and office buildings.
Chlorine dioxide is now being used in oral hygiene, patient wound care and as part of Drinking Water Hygiene Programmes. Extensive testing has confirmed the safety of chlorine dioxide. This includes extensive studies by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Chlorine dioxide assists in protecting the environment from harmful chemicals, dangerous bacteria and by-products formed from other disinfection methods. Within certain industries chlorine dioxide has led to a significant improvement in the surrounding aquatic eco-system.
Advantages of using chlorine dioxide include;
- It is effective against a wide variety of bacteria, yeasts, viruses, fungi, protozoa, spores, moulds, mildews and other microbes. It is particularly effective at killing Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Legionella.
>- It exhibits rapid kill of target organisms, often in seconds.
- Chlorine dioxide is effective over a wide pH range.
- It specifically targets bonds that are only present in harmful or odorous molecules or species. Hardly any of it is consumed by reactions with harmless substances. This means that it is highly effective as a biocide at very low concentrations.
- It is effective over a wide range of temperatures, including waters of up to 80˚C.
- Chlorine dioxide is biodegradable.
- Unlike many other biocides, such as chlorine, it doesn’t react with primary organics to form harmful trihalomethanes (THM’s).
- It eradicates biofilm. Regular dosing of chlorine dioxide can prevent recurrence of biofilms, which act as a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
