Cloxide™ - Stabilised Chlorine Dioxide

Cloxide™ is an aqueous solution containing 5% (50,000ppm) chlorine dioxide, stabilised in solution.

The product is manufactured to pH 9 and has a twelve-month shelf life, if maintained at this pH and stored in cool dark conditions.

Chlorine dioxide has been recognised for many years as being a very potent oxidising biocide. Unlike ozone it has good residual activity. Chlorine dioxide has been approved in most countries for its use in drinking and food process water. It has less adverse environmental impact than chlorine, which it is rapidly replacing in large industrial applications.

Until now, chloine dioxide had been generated as a gas (dissolved in water) and is therefore unstable to transport except at low concentrations. Efficient generation previously depended on generating high volumes of product, so even where it could be generated on site its use was limited to large volume users only.

In Cloxide™ the chlorie dioxide has been buffered in such a way as to allow a relatively high concentration of chlorine dioxide to be stabilised. It is safe to use and transport. In its manufactured state Cloxide™ has only limited biocidial activity, but will react with acidulous organisms such as slime and algae. Cloxide™ will also react very rapidly with hydrogen sulphide and many other odour causing molecules. Although used extensively as an odour control agent, the major benefit of Cloxide ™ as a stabilised product is its ability to give long term bactericidal and slime eliminating action in water.

By a simple ‘activation’ – mainly the lowering of pH - Cloxide™ can be converted to a solution of ‘free’ (or active) chlorine dioxide, which has all the powerful biocidal activity of generated chlorine dioxide. This process of ‘activating’ Cloxide™ has led to the introduction of chlorine dioxide into many processes where the chemical could not previously have been conveniently used.

One important aspect of the ‘activation’ of Cloxide ™ is that the process can be manipulated to produce a combination of both ‘free’ and ‘stabilised’ chlorine dioxide. This mixture acts both as a powerful biocide for immediate use and a slower acting residual for longer-term protection within “dead-legs”.

Cloxide™ can be utilised within the food industry to give improved levels of hygiene and increased product shelf life, which are now essential prerequisites for a wide range of fresh and chilled food products.

It is a much more versatile product than generated chlorine dioxide and in many cases its versatility makes its use more economical.

Cloxide™ should not be confused with sodium chlorite products, which are often sold as stabilised chlorine dioxide; these products produce little chlorine dioxide and do not have the residual activity of Cloxide™.
