Water Hygiene

Swimming PoolCleanliness, water quality and microbiological control are essential factors in the safe operation of engineered water systems. As specialists in the field of water hygiene, Clearwater provides not only traditional methods of monitoring, cleaning, disinfection and refurbishment of domestic and process water systems, but also innovative control systems. All systems and practices are designed to meet specific site requirements for industrial, commercial, leisure and healthcare premises. All working methods and control systems comply with the latest Codes of Practice and specifications.

Refurbishment works, relating to cold water storage tanks and downwater systems (including re-coating services, installation of rodent/ insect screens, re-configuring pipework to avoid water stagnation, fitting of new lids and vents and total tank replacements), are carried out in compliance with the Water Research Council guidance and Water Supply Regulations, with due regard to ACOP L8.

Water Tank

Typically the systems to be considered are:

  • Cold water storage tanks
  • Cooling towers
  • Evaporative condensers
  • Domestic water tanks/ systems
  • Calorifiers and water heaters
  • Air handling units
  • System pipework

Continuous system control – using chlorine dioxide

New technology has created the opportunity for chlorine dioxide to be applied throughout a wide range of water treatment applications that call for the prevention of microbial growth.

Chlorine dioxide has been called the ‘ideal’ biocide for a number of reasons:

Cooling Tower Fins
  • It is effective against a wide variety of bacteria, yeasts, viruses, fungi, protozoa, spores, moulds, mildews and other microbes. It is particularly effective at killing Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Legionella.
  • Chlorine Dioxide is non-toxic, non-irritating and anti-inflammatory.
  • It exhibits rapid kill of target organisms, often in seconds.
  • Chlorine Dioxide is effective over a wide pH range.
  • It specifically targets bonds that are only present in harmful or odorous molecules or species. None of it is used up in reactions with harmless substances. This means that it is highly effective as a biocide at very low concentrations.
  • It is effective over a wide range of temperatures, including waters of up to 80˚C.
  • Chlorine Dioxide is biodegradable.
  • Unlike many other biocides, such as chlorine, it doesn’t react with primary organics to form harmful trihalomethanes (THM’s).
  • It eradicates biofilm. Regular dosing of chlorine dioxide can prevent recurrence of biofilms, which act as a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

New delivery technologies bring the power of chlorine dioxide without the expense and complication of on-site generation or high level training.

Typical applications include:

  • Dairy ProductsConstant dosing of cold and hot water systems within buildings.
  • Product washing and system disinfection throughout the food industry. Disinfection and neutralisation as a part of C.I.P systems.
  • Cooling tower water.
  • Intense disinfection for hydrotherapy pools and ancillary services within hospitals.
  • Elimination of white water mould and pink slime in swimming pools, including filter and balance tank biofilm build-up.
  • Eliminate fouling by micro-organisms in water softeners.
  • Treating bacteria in car-wash recycling water.
  • Prevents the formation of slime and odour causing bacteria and funghi within ice making machines.
